Description
The Emergency Department Paramedic position is an experienced professional that provides care in the Emergency Department setting under the supervision of the Registered Nurse in accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing delegation and supervision guidelines and within the scope of practice of a Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Paramedic is an adjunct to the Register Nurse in providing care and supports the clinical care within the department to support of direct and indirect patient care activities throughout UVA Emergency Department.
Provides patient/family centered care focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. This includes rapid evaluation of life threatening emergencies, implementation of prescribed therapies within scope of practice, collaboration with nursing and medical team to establish treatment goals.
Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information throughout the continuum of care and as an effective member of the healthcare team.
Demonstrates the ability to function in a professional setting through active participation in a professional practice model. This includes participating in shared governance, adherence to standards of care, participation in peer review and professional development promoting leadership and clinical excellence, effective team skills, autonomous practice and acknowledgment of accountability for actions and critical thinking.
Acts as a patient advocate throughout the continuum of care including all patient settings and in the community.
Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes.
Uses medications, treatments and protocols within the scope of practice as defined by the Commonwealth of Virginia EMS Board, under the orders from a License Independent Practitioner (LIP).
Documents any medication and treatment rendered in the Electronic Medical Record.
Provides and documents patient re–assessment in the Electronic Medical Record in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.
Demonstrates high–level teamwork with other members of the Emergency Department Care team.
Supports an environment of evidence–based practice/research/quality improvement initiatives 12. Demonstrates the organization?s patient promise at all times.
Monitor and assist in transport of critical patients throughout the organization.
Assistance in trauma resuscitation as assigned (including documentation)
Facilitates Optimal Patient flow through the Emergency Department and ensures the safety and security of all patients.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
Experience: 1 year of experience as a paramedic or 1 year of healthcare experience.
Licensure: EMT–P in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS, ACLS and PALS certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling, bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 – 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
