Summary of Job Duties: The Office of Educational Development and Educational and Student Success Center (ESSC) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is seeking a faculty teaching specialist to implement educational innovations to improve the learning outcomes of students. The Assistant Professor will guide, recommend, and influence faculty to adopt best practices to improve their teaching and students' learning outcomes. The Assistant Professor will work as part of a team focused on assisting faculty with educational design and delivery. This includes assessing and applying research-based design principles, methods, pedagogy, and best practices across teaching environments and evaluating the effectiveness of educational innovations for faculty development, student-focused teaching support, and evaluation of instructional methods and tools supported by the department.
Qualifications:

Master's degree in education, instructional design, educational technology, or related field plus four (4) years of experience in teaching, instructional design, and/or evaluation of curricular materials required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to identify meaningful learning outcomes utilizing a literature review and selected standards.
  • Ability to realize the learning objectives through selecting the appropriate instructional or pedagogical approach and available tools (face-to-face, hybrid, or online).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with peers and clients.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple activities under time constraints.
  • Familiarity with and application of Adult Learning theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and learning technologies.
  • Familiarity with software tools to develop learning and multimedia objects, i.e., SoftChalk, Articulate Storyline, HTML, MS Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Teaching experience in medical education, healthcare, K-12, or higher education.
  • Experience in developing and implementing active learning strategies, such as peer-based learning, problem-based learning, or team-based learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in education, instructional design, or related fields.
  • Experience with assessment software such as ExamSoft, Respondus, and EAC Outcomes.
  • National Board Certification for Teaching (K12 teachers).


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with faculty to analyze needs and to design interventions and curricular materials to achieve desirable learning outcomes

  • Collaborates to plan and provide faculty development workshops and programming on teaching and learning strategies

  • Analyzes, selects, and uses learning tools and techniques in course delivery (face-to-face, hybrid, or online) and supports faculty use of these tools

  • Creates instructional materials for faculty development, including lesson plans, multi-media learning objects (video, audio, graphics), PowerPoint presentations, audio/video scripts, case scenarios, learning guides, etc. using available tools

  • Participates in team-based planning and implementation of instructional design and teaching support, including the implementation and oversight of the Teaching Observation by Peers (TOPs) program

  • Provides consultations for faculty who wish to work on specific elements in order to improve teaching and learning.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of educational innovations and communicate results

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
