The Opportunity
Tetra Tech is looking for a full-time, Field Environmental Scientist or Engineer based in Albuquerque, NM to play a key role in investigating and remediating abandoned uranium mines. Response, assessment, and evaluation services (RAES) are parts of a larger program associated with abandoned mines. You will support the program with a mix of hands-on fieldwork, technical reporting, and problem-solving - ideal for those who enjoy both the physical challenge of working in remote areas and the intellectual rigor of environmental analysis.

Your Role:
• Field Investigations & Cleanup – Conduct environmental assessments and support remediation efforts at abandoned uranium mines. Expect off-trail hiking, steep terrain, and working in remote locations.
• Technical Report Writing – Prepare data transmittal reports, literature reviews, RI/FS reports, EECA reports, RSE reports, and general environmental site assessments.
• Environmental Data Collection & Analysis – Execute assignments that involve field sampling, site characterization, radiological monitoring, and geological mapping while ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
• Collaboration & Communication – Work as part of a team, adapting to changing field conditions and communicating findings to senior staff.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 1+ years of environmental consulting experience (including a strong drive to learn and grow in this field).. You will also have / be:
• Strong technical writing skills.
• A self-motivated, problem-solving mindset with positive attitude—someone who takes initiative, works independently, and embraces challenges.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills—you'll be translating complex data into actionable insights.
Bonus Points for:
• Experience with environmental monitoring, sampling design, radiological surveillance, and geologic mapping.
• Knowledge of GIS, statistical software (R, Julia, JMP, Minitab, XLSTAT, Excel), or geologic mapping.
• Familiarity with NORM/TENORM delineation in uranium mining, oil & gas, or other industries.
• Background in radiologically impacted sites, abandoned mines, or uranium mining.
• Experience working on indigenous lands or knowledge of Native American culture/language.
• Willingness to work on meaningful environmental restoration projects that make a real impact.
Degree / Certifications
• BS/BA degree in geology/engineering or an environmental-related field is required.
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training is preferred.
Work Environment
This role offers a blend of office and fieldwork, with a good portion of time spent in the field. Expect fieldwork in remote areas of Arizona and New Mexico, often requiring 1-to-2-week mobilizations.
You must be able to:
• Physically fit and comfortable with fieldwork in remote areas — hiking in rugged, steep, uneven terrain is a big part of the job. May involve off-trail hiking too.
• Carry up to 30 pounds of field equipment.
• Wear personal protective gear as needed.
• Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
• Field assignments will often require overnight stays.
• Drive on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required. Driving to remote sites is a key part of the job.
