Overview

The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician I. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required.

This position is eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000! Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 3, 2022 are eligible. Environmental Factors

Duties require working in extreme outdoor weather conditions. All employees may be required to report to work outside of their area /work schedule and must be reachable by phone. Dangers are present when work is performed near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside litter. Employees may be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on the roads as traffic passes, emergencies such as flood, ice, snow hazardous materials. An incumbent must be able to use tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work as well as lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required prior to operation of vehicles or operating equipment. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

No education or experience required.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Special Requirements

A valid driver's license is required.

An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for the successful completion of original probation.
An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled.
