OverviewThe Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living (DAIL) is seeking a Staff Attorney to represent the Department in connection with the administrative appeals requested by applicants and recipients of developmental and long-term care services, licensees, and alleged perpetrators of abuse, neglect or exploitation of vulnerable adults, who are aggrieved by decisions made by the Department. The Staff Attorney provides legal support to division staff and to the commissioner or designee and then represents the Department before the Human Services Board. In addition, the Staff Attorney serves as the Department's Legal Assistance Developer under the Older Americans Act (OAA), providing leadership in developing legal assistance programs throughout the state and assuming the responsibilities found in the OAA in the areas of elder rights and elder abuse.
The Staff Attorney is a full-time, exempt position based in Waterbury, VT, but a hybrid work schedule is available. Salary and benefits are based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the Attorney Pay Plan. The State of Vermont is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
This is an exempt full-time position. The salary for this position is commensurate with applicant's background and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan. The State of Vermont offers competitive insurance benefits as well as workplace flexibility.
Minimum QualificationsCandidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar or eligible for admission with at least 5 years of relevant legal experience and have excellent oral and written communication skills, a demonstrated commitment to human services, knowledge of administrative law and other areas of the law relevant to the work of the Department, and the ability to manage a significant caseload.
Litigation experience is preferred but not required.
