Design Engineer, Cold Heading

Position Summary:

The Cold Heading Design Engineer III is responsible for developing new product concepts with a focus on cold headed manufacturing.  This role will support new product design and cold heading progression/tooling design. Responsibilities also include experience and understanding with machining and fabrication in support of prototype work, exercising sound engineering judgement and presenting analysis summaries which support design decisions. This position in the R&D Department is generally intended for mechanical engineers with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with experience in the manufacturing methods previously described.  The Design Engineer III works both independently and in a team environment with Project Managers, Manufacturing Engineers, Operations, and Test Technicians. A Design Engineer III frequently initiates collaboration with other departments to transition projects from development to production.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create innovative design solutions.
  • Manage multiple design projects in a fast-paced development cycle.
  • Take new product concepts through all aspects of the product development cycle ultimately resulting in a producible and innovative product.
  • Interface with Marketing and customers to understand and document development requirements encompassing all trade channels of the business (i.e., commercial, law enforcement, international, and military).
  • Provide technical support for military, law enforcement, and international proposals.
  • Construct design models in 3D CAD, preferably using SolidWorks.
  • Analyze part progressions utilizing simulation software, preferably experience with DEFORM.
  • Create design drawings, supervise drafting activities, review, and approve engineering drawings.
  • Maintain standards for technical drawings, internal specifications, and related engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate prototype build, test, and ballistic evaluation.
  • Identify Quality Assurance requirements.
  • Support Sales and Agency Customers by troubleshooting and resolving field issues.
  • Make improvements of existing products. Investigate and solve problems in cooperation with Quality and Operations departments.
  • Make decisions on the disposition of nonconforming material.

Education and/or Experience:

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering discipline required.
  • 5 years minimum experience with multiple different manufacturing methods, cold heading preferred.
  • 5 years of related design experience with small or medium caliber ammunition/ordnance is strongly preferred.
  • 3 years minimum experience with defense contracts and product development desired.
  • Passion for ammunition reloading, shooting, and/or hunting highly desired.
  • Microsoft Office and 3D CAD modeling experience required; SolidWorks preferred.
  • Must be familiar with GD&T symbology and standard inspection methods.  
  • Overall, must be able to work in a team, lead, plan, and execute.
  • Understanding of manufacturing methods and techniques including but not limited to cold heading, stamping/drawing, machining, tooling and tool steels, additive manufacturing, heat treating and coatings.
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication of complicated subjects is required. Organization of documentation and record keeping shall be to a high standard.
  • Design of experimentation, data collection, statistical analysis and clear/concise presentation of results required.
  • Actively maintains safe operations and work area by adhering to all safety, health and quality programs procedures and initiatives.
  • Comfortable using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which is required for specified activities.
  • Some travel required.
