Here is what you will be doing
- Responsible for the daily required volume of railcar repairs, with safe associated railcar movement in the entire yard of the Savage Pocatello, ID, operation. Will prepare necessary reports and forms. These could include bad-order forms and records of billable repairs. Responsible for ensuring all repairs over a given dollar threshold are estimated and approved by the railcar fleet owner before proceeding with the repair
- Ensure compliance with all AAR and FRA standards, abide by Savage's railcar repair quality control program
- Perform both scheduled and on-demand maintenance. Monitoring all repairs and supplies consumed for accurate inventory and billing to railcar fleet owners. Will work with two to four other crew members to safely perform railcar repairs and movements
- Assist in providing front-line compliance with Operation Clean Sweep and Savage 5S cleanliness and orderliness standards. Will perform or assist in re-railing activities as needed
- Operate forklifts, light cranes and a locomotive or railcar mover – Savage will provide and expect training and certification
- Work a 5-day a week schedule with 8 hour days the normal expected schedule, significant overtime or weekend work will be required on an exception basis. Will work with and support logistics or admin coordinators in their pursuit of billing for railcar repairs
Requirements of a successful Rail Carman
- Welding certification; need to be able to pass AWS Welding bend test (3 positions). Journeyman carman experience desired but not required
- Familiarity with removing, repairing, and replacing defective components including wheels, safety appliances, truck and brake equipment, couplers, yokes, draft gears, and air brake valves
- Weld proficiently to secure new parts or repair damaged parts. Ability to work at heights (with provided fall protection), on uneven terrain, and in confined spaces
- Experience with touch up paint and lining application. A desire to learn the skills necessary to do the job safely and in a way that adds value to the Customer's operation and exceeds their expectations
- A willingness to complete any assigned task(s) as long as they have been properly trained or are properly certified
- For safety reasons, must be able to read, write and understand, and follow written and/or verbal instructions in English
Here are some of the physical requirements of this role
- Railcar repair crews will work both indoors and outdoors every day and as a result will be exposed to the elements. Over half the time work will be in a covered area.
- Railcar repairmen must be physically able to do the following:
- Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safely
- Operate railcar hand brakes
- Operate rail switches
- Must have the ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time and lift up to 75 lbs.
