The Able-Bodied Seamen assist with the operation of deck and cargo machinery and perform the duties of helmsman, lookout when at sea, and duties relating to navigational watch standing assigned by the OICNW. When transferring cargo, the Able-Bodied Seamen assist the Deck Officer withstanding a cargo watch. The Able-Bodied Seamen report directly to the Chief Mate for cargo, maintenance, and safety related duties, and the OICNW for navigational duties.
 
Here is what you will be doing:
  • Assists the Chief Mate with the inspection, testing and maintenance of deck and cargo machinery and systems as well as all firefighting, lifesaving and safety equipment onboard
  • Participate in all required Fire, Emergency, Abandon ship and safety/security Training Drills and exercises 
  • Perform duties as directed by the Master and Deck Officers safely and efficiently
  • Obtain working knowledge of the Safety Management System and comply with all procedures outlined a relating to the position
  • Accurately report and record Maintenance related activities as requested by an Officer
  • Maintain a fixed daily work rotation as per STCW Work Rest guidelines

Requirements/Qualifications: 

  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential international and national endorsements capable of foreign voyages
  • International STCW Endorsements: Able Seafarer-Deck (STCWII/5), RFPNW (STCW II/4), STCW Basic Safety Training (STCW VI/1), PSC (STCWVI/2), Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) (STCW VI/6)
  • National Endorsements: Able Bodied Seaman Unlimited
  • Lifeboatman, Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, Steward's Department (F.H.)
  • Tankerman Assistant limited to Dangerous Liquid (DL) Cargoes PIC endorsement is preferred
  • USCG/STCW medical certificate, renewed every 2 years
  • Valid TWIC card and Passport
  • Other certificates and endorsements as deemed required for the operation and by Savage Marine 

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to stand on uneven surfaces for long periods
  • Lift up to 50lbs without accommodations
  • Day for Day Rotation work schedule (avg. 45 days on/45 days off rotation)
