Organization Overview
Rockefeller University provides a variety of housing accommodations in support of the scientific needs of the University. Apartments and dormitories are available to full-time faculty and students,and hotel accommodations are available for faculty and guests of the Rockefeller community. The Housing Department provides a safe,secure,affordable residence that is conveniently located near the campus. Most of the University's apartments are located in full-service apartment buildings,with door staff and a variety of amenities. A few smaller apartment buildings are located within a short walking distance from campus. Dormitories and guest accommodations are located on the main campus. The Rockefeller campus is located on the Upper East Side,one of New York's most desirable residential neighborhoods. The 45-person housing staff consists of a group of mechanics,porters,housekeepers,and doorpersons,a superintendent for each building,and an office staff to address administrative needs.
Overview
Working under the direction of the Building Superintendent and the Supervisor, the Mechanic is responsible for repairing problems in apartments, maintaining and repairing all building-wide systems and equipment, and responding to emergency repairs as needed.
Responsibilities
The Mechanic's Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:
- Schedule repairs in response to tenants' maintenance requests
- Maintain all mechanical rooms and machinery, workshops, equipment rooms, and storage rooms neatly and in good working order
- Keep equipment and tools organized and in good working order
- Maintain an inventory of replacement parts, including electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and lock supplies
- Conduct periodic preventive maintenance on equipment such as belt replacement; cleaning and replacement of filters; cleaning, lubrication, repair, and replacement of motors and pumps
- Maintain and treat water for children's sprinkler
- Change air conditioning filters and treat cooling water
- Test and log emergency generator
- Other job duties may be assigned as needed
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required. Must have general knowledge of building systems and mechanical equipment used in residential buildings, including locks, flooring, windows, plumbing, electricity and switches, alarms, steam traps, packing, pipes, and valves, HVAC systems, and all mechanical systems and equipment used in residential buildings. The Mechanic must have the ability to interact courteously with tenants and the ability to get along well with others in the work group and the Housing Department.
