TRACK GEOMETRY ENGINEER                                    Roanoke, VA – Engineering Dept

 

Job Description

Norfolk Southern's Engineering Department (Track Geometry Group) operates and maintains precision, real-time, track inspection vehicles.  The Track Geometry Engineer works with a talented team to design, develop, implement, and maintain track measurement systems on Track Geometry Cars, locomotives, and hyrail trucks.

Encompassing a blend of systems, technical, and management functions, the position has wide-ranging autonomy while making key contributions to provide the highest quality, most cost effective, and user-friendly track geometry inspections in the industry.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, improve, and maintain data collection systems mounted on rail bound equipment.
  • Develop mechanical designs and CAD models for mounting and protecting measurement equipment onboard on-track equipment.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of track inspection vehicles, trucks, and other research vehicles, along with their associated operating systems and back-office features.
  • Work with Federal, State, and local government or regulatory agencies as required.
  • Explore opportunities to expand the functionality and deployment of autonomous systems.
  • Work with equipment suppliers to address issues with data, exceptions, coverage, uptime, contact lists.
  • Improve and support track maintenance activities by working with Maintenance of Way to provide information in the most user-friendly manner.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's/Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering

 

 

Job Related Experience:

  • Entry Level Position
  • Experience in the railroad industry and operations preferred

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with CAD drawing and modeling (AutoCAD Inventor)
  • Proficiency with MS Office products, SQL, and MATLAB
  • Testing/analysis experience in an applicable engineering field
  • Ability to work independently and part of a diverse interdisciplinary team
  • Experience in data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation, with the ability to draw conclusions and communicate results
  • Ability to observe all safety and security procedures; follow NS and FRA Rules and Regulations; determine appropriate action beyond guidelines
  • Understand and troubleshoot electro-mechanical systems, including system level assembly and repair, along with software and hardware functionality
  • Familiarity with laser and inertial equipment function and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of general manufacturing processes such as machining and welding
