Overview:

 

Responsible for orientation and training of the phlebotomy staff, assuring that coworkers are able to demonstrate competency in all areas of blood collection and as appropriate, point of care testing. Trains and certifies coworkers to collect drug screens and breath alcohol samples, following the Department of Transportation chain of custody requirements. Utilizes appropriate modalities to assess skill level of phlebotomy coworkers. Maintains documentation of training and competency checks in accordance with regulatory requirements. Assists Phlebotomy Supervisor with budget preparation, adherence to the established productivity standard, payroll/time and attendance functions, coworker schedules, and other supervisory responsibilities. As needed, serves as the phlebotomy coordinator, assigning workload and coordinating lunch/break schedules.


Qualifications:

  • Qualifications Education: Minimum-Associate's Degree in a science related field.
  • Experience: Five years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Certifications: Must be a registered Phlebotomist by a national certifying agency.
  • Other: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, attentiveness to detail, and ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Must work well under pressure. Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively with coworkers. Must be able to function well in an environment with multiple work demands and short turnaround timeframes. Must be able to walk distances within the hospital and on the campus. Computer skills, excellent organization and customer service skills are also needed.
  • Equipment Used: Computer system, blood collection equipment, point of care testing devices.
  • Preferred Experience: Phlebotomy coordinator experience and/or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Preferred Certifications: Certified trainer for collection of Department of Transportation Drug Screens.
