Position: Patient Care Technician

 

Department: Med/Surg Stepdown, Mercy South

 

Shift: 36 hours/week, Days

Overview:

 Under the direction of the RN or LPN, assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patients highest level of wellness. Works cooperatively with others as part of a team; recognizes the importance of group goals. Performs designated clinical procedures and non-clinical support tasks essential to providing care to the patient.

 

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:
- Performs daily hygiene measures.
- Performs routine daily activities: ambulation, ensures dietary needs are met (ex. intake documentation feeding assistance), turns and positions patients, observes for skin breakdown and utilize appropriate supplies to perform daily care.
- Maintains Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Gathers and records patient data (ex. vital signs) and documents in EMR. Files reports accurately and timely - prepares charts for admission/discharge/transfers.
- May perform point of care testing or specimen collection as determined by unit (ex. glucose monitoring).
- Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to the appropriate personnel. Communicates with other members of the healthcare team to optimize the care of the patient.
- Participates in the admission, discharge and transfer of patients and their belongings.
- Demonstrates appropriate stewardship of resources, charge reconciliation process and document charges accordingly.
- Utilizes good clinical judgement and effective time management skills.
- Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and accepts delegation of tasks while operating within scope of practice.
- Maintain compliance with certifications and eLearning assignments.
- Performs clerical duties as needed (i.e., answers phones, monitors lights).
- PCTs will perform advanced patient care skills, duties requiring additional education, training and/or competency validation. Additional duties may include:
- Blood cultures
- Enteral tube feeding
- Wound Care- nonsterile Dressing change
- IV removal
- Suture tray set up
- Chest tube set up
- Visual Acuity
- Pelvic Exam Set up
- Burn dressing changes and debridement
- Handheld Bovie Pens
- Whirlpool baths for wound care

The below competencies are not allowed in the state of Oklahoma unless the coworker has completed the Oklahoma state AUA program.
- Phlebotomy
- Staple removal
- Sterile Gloves- Don/Doff
- Sterile technique- create/maintain field
- Established Trach care/suctioning- closed and open systems only
- Urinary catheter indwelling (M/F) removal
- Urinary Catheter Specimen- via leurlock port- requires separate competency
- Wound Care- Sterile dressing change
- IV Initiation (in select departments based on state regulations)
- Other duties as assigned.

Safety/Risk Management:
- Follows Mercy policy and procedures related to safety, confidentiality, and patient rights/regulations.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and practices sound infection prevention techniques.
- Assesses safety needs and provides for a safe environment: ex: Fall Precautions; Restraint Management; Patient Identification; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies; Safe Patient Handling
- Participates in Quality Improvement activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care.

Technology:
- Utilizes unit specific technology to perform daily tasks and maintain appropriate communications (ex: computer, pagers, zone phones, Rover, etc.).

 

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma, G.E.D., CNA/CPCT or enrolled in a healthcare career program through their high school curriculum, and/or a current co-worker of Mercy.
  • Experience: None required
    • In the state of Missouri: If no previous experience, Mercy will provide a required 175-hour training program that meets the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services requirements. The program will be completed as part of the new hire orientation process and must be completed within 90 days of hire to remain in the PCT position per state guidelines.
  • Certifications: BLS Required within one month of hire, completion of PCT competencies within 3 months of hire
  • Other: Minimum Physical Requirements
    • Position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
    • Position requires prolonged standing and walking each shift
    • Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties
  • Preferred Experience: EMT, Paramedic or Previous Patient Care Experience
  • Preferred Certifications: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Unlicensed Assistant (AUA) in the state of Oklahoma, Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT).
