MedStar Health is looking for an Overdose Survivor's Outreach Program Community Recovery Coach to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center!

The Overdose Survivor's Outreach Program (OSOP) Community Recovery Coach is an integral part of the SBIRT team that is designated to conduct outreach and engagement to survivors of an opioid overdose after discharge and referral from the emergency department. Provides non-clinical services intended to aid patients in establishing recovery and reducing the risk associated with a subsequent overdose. Assists in completing referrals to recovery support and substance use treatment services and develops service plans to promote successful linkage to referred services. Primarily provides services in the community but may also meet patients in the Emergency Department to assure successful continuity in care.

Primary Duties: 

  • Conducts street outreach to locate and engage with patients referred from hospital emergency departments. Conducts screenings to understand the patient's history of drug and/or alcohol use, treatment history, social service and other recovery support needs and motivation to change behavior.  

  • Facilitates patient's readiness for change and uses motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support and encourage the patient to plan for reduction or elimination of drug and alcohol use. Assists patients in setting personal recovery goals.  

  • Works with healthcare team and patient to identify community supports and treatment services to promote recovery. Supports patients and families to understand how to access community resources. Assists patients in linking to community support and treatment services, including helping secure transportation and other resources. 

  • Acts as peer support after a patient is discharged from the hospital. This involves face-to-face and phone engagement with patients in various community settings. Provides family members with recovery support materials. 

  • Provides education on risks of overdose and assures that patients and significant others have naloxone and are trained to use. Completes required reports and other necessary documentation accurately 

 

Qualifications:  

  • High School Diploma or GED. 

  • 1-2 years of professional experience in a substance use disorder setting providing peer support/navigation. 

  • Actively engaged in his/her own recovery program with at least three years demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use with no relapses. 

  • Certified Peer Specialist through the DC Department of Behavioral Health; and/or Recovery Coach.   

  • Driver License, Valid and in State. 

  • Reliable transportation.
