General Summary of Position
Performs duties relative to receiving, placing, identifying bodies in the morgue; assists pathologist in performing autopsies.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists Pathologist/Residents in performing autopsies which includes transferring bodies to autopsy table, laying out instruments and supplies for postmortem examinations, may open and close postmortem incisions, removal of heavy organs using hand/bone saws as needed, completing documentary notes, cleaning and returning the body to appropriate storage.
  • Enters pertinent information into the Midas/CoPath patient database. Maintains a manual log book for signing cases in and out of the morgue. Prepares a daily adult/infant inventory report, to include identified problems to management.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the Autopsy room, work areas and equipment. Prepares instrument trays.
  • Prepares chemical solutions for use during postmortem examinations.
  • Disposes of body parts, biologic waste as per required by regulatory agencies and hospital guidelines.
  • Trains pathology residents on designated aspects of autopsy procedure, participates in department inservice sessions as required.
  • Prepares the Frozen section room for daily operations to include cleaning room, instruments, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Gives guided tours of the morgue to clergy and other authorized personnel.
  • Picks Up specimens at various locations in the Hospital. Delivers reports and mail as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • May require up to l year of technical or other specialized training, such as training as a Morgue Diener.

    Experience

    • 1 to 3 years experience required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
    • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.


    This position has a hiring range of $20.941 - $31.852
