Description

Performs a variety of laboratory testing from waived to high complexity per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). Will work in one or more laboratory sections. Evaluates and reports results for use in patient diagnosis and treatment.
Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field. required
Experience
  • 1-2 years Two years previous Medical Technologist experience in comparable clinical laboratory setting required and
  • 1-2 years Two year experience with chemistry, hematology, blood bank and micro set-up experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Medical Lab Scientist-ASCP ASCP, HEW preferred or
  • equivalent preferred

  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

  • Perform and document quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards.
  • Accurately enter assay results into client reports
  • Resolve validity issues and amend reports.
  • Provide phlebotomy and other specimen collection.
  • Ensure client turnaround times (TATs) are met.
  • Fill all reagents needed and document quality control information for equipment used
  • Prepare equipment for next shift (fill reagents, run controls, etc.).
  • Document and report problems to supervisor.
  • Clean and stock supplies in work area.
  • Enter and track client sample and result information.
  • Perform maintenance procedures as directed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and abnormal test results.
  • Assist and train new technical staff.
  • Assist in development of new procedures and protocols to improve efficiency of department. Act as a resource for the department, other departments, other labs and client inquiries.
  • Can manage the department in the absence of the supervisor. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
