General Summary of Position
Manages security staff. Responsible for hospital and staff training and budget implementation. Monitors and provides protection and security for hospital buildings and premises, and for associates, patients, and visitors. Manages the daily operations of the Security Department. Patrols hospital property responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects or persons which may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors, and responds according to established policies, procedures and regulations. Must obtain and maintain a connection to corporate security leadership and State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response, designated as an Unarmed Officer, assigned and deployed within the hospital consistent with the limitations of the Unarmed SPO commission from Maryland State Police or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to system and department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with system/hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
  • Develops and recommends department operating budget and manages resources according to approved budget.
  • Directly manages and motivates assigned staff. Selects, trains, orients and assigns department staff. Develops and evaluates standards of performance and conducts performance management planning. Initiates and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information.
  • Oversees daily operations of department to ensure effective operations. Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers. Responds to security and medical code calls.
  • Monitors camera surveillance system. Monitors conduct of patients and visitors on hospital premises; confronts unauthorized persons for questioning as needed.
  • Collaborates with local, state and national agencies relative to hospital security investigation including the perusal of criminal actions against individual when warranted.
  • Ensures that rounds, schedules and directives are maintained around the clock.
  • Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings and trials.
  • When responding to circumstances where the exercise of SPO authority may be required, takes appropriate measures to secure the scene, preserve evidence, detain and secure suspected criminal perpetrators, and assist responding law enforcement authority as directed by Assistant Director. Completes written reports and when subpoenaed or requested, notifies Legal Counsel for MedStar of same and gains guidance to testify at legal proceedings, hearings and trials.
  • Establishes and maintains a visitor control and access procedure, including an associate identification system and a lock and key control system.
  • Inquiries into and investigate matters pertaining to both alleged losses and thefts and wrongful acts of individuals affecting hospital security.
  • Monitors security activities to ensure safe conditions for associates, patients and visitors; protects hospital buildings, assets and premises.
  • Obtains detailed reports of incidents involving security and keeps administration informed of incidents and developments.
  • Provides technical knowledge to assist management in the design of system and department specific procedures and coordinate the education component of the security program.
  • Subject matter expert who facilitates a presentation on workplace violence and HH Protection Policies.
  • Supervises the maintenance and preparation of records, files and other documents.
  • Uses DARS database link to MVA to acquire vehicle listings when needed.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and business unit in community outreach efforts. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and maintains effective working relationships with other departments.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred

    Experience

    • 5-7 years years of progressively more responsible job-related security or law enforcement experience required
    • 3-4 years of prior supervisory experience required
    • Experience in healthcare, university, and/or hospitality setting (patient-first, customer-first environment)
    • Experience with coaching and developing a high performing security team required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • DL - Valid State Driver's License in good standing required
    • MD Special Police Commission - MDSPC within 180 Days required or
    • Special Police Officer - DC - SPO within 180 Days required
    • Basic or Advanced Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS preferred
    • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) - Board Certified in Security Management preferred
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    • Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation and crisis prevention intervention.

    This position has a hiring range of $77,480 - $131,310
