Job Summary

To maintain a high quality of work performance in occupational therapy. Performs occupational therapy professional services that are concerned with the evaluation and treatment of individuals to prevent, treat and restoration of function following disease, trauma, psychological or social disability. Services may include various occupational therapy tests and measurements, exercises and modalities. Operate in a lead capacity for anticipated questions and guidance; also, required to provide prompt decisions while ensuring safe, efficient, and effective occupational therapy services.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Graduate of an occupational therapy educational program approved by the Accreditation on Council for Occupational Therapy Education or other American Occupational Therapy Association accrediting body for occupational therapy or other educational program which the board considers to be substantially equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: 3 years in acute care setting

Required Certifications/Licensure: Licensed as an Occupational Therapist by the South Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy;
Certification in CPR
Required Training: None

Essential Functions
  • Provides direct occupational therapy patient care upon referral by a physician or advanced practice provider using specific competencies.
  • Demonstrates Age specific competence to provide developmentally appropriate care/treatment for the following patient population: a. Infant (Birth to 1 year)    b. Child (1 year through 12 years) c. Adolescent (13 years through 17 years) d. Adult (18 years to 65 years) e. Geriatric (over 65 years).
  • Develops occupational therapy treatment plans and monitors progress.
  • Administers occupational therapy treatments, such as upper extremity strengthening and ; coordination exercises, splint fabrication, sensory integration, pre-vocational skills, and activities of daily living training.
  • Documents/records appropriate patient treatment data, such as patient progress notes, evaluation reports and discharge summaries. 
  • Works with manager/director/schedulers to coordinate the work flow and ensure timely and accurate service.
  • Must utilize good judgement and makes appropriate decisions above and beyond that required of a staff occupational therapist.
  • Represents department and communicates with the interdisciplinary team for discharge planning and coordination of medical services during hospital stay.
  • Represents department in meetings, such as attending patient care conferences and providing in-services for other hospital departments such as nursing, housekeeping, etc.
  • Assist in providing clinical supervision of rehab techs and students in their duties.
  • Provides input to manager/director on personnel matters including competence, performance, praise, discipline, hiring and discharge.
  • Uses effective time management to complete patient care assignments and meets departmental productivity standards.
  • Communicates back to management without prompting.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates sound professional judgement and acts in accordance with the state occupational therapy practice act, hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participates in professional activities for continued self-development, and growth of technical knowledge and skills; completes a minimum of 10 education hours annually in current area of practice with a least 4 of those hours in leadership.
  • Therapist will be able to meet deadlines and commitments with minimal supervision.
  • Uses safe techniques and safe patient handling equipment as needed for protection of patients and self while performing duties.
  • Demonstrates competence in safe delivery of care.
  • Is a role model for service excellence.
  • Will be assigned charge duties as needed.
  • Collaborates with the clinical educator to assist in the development of new services, programs and preparation for annual departmental competencies.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
