Pathology/Histology Technician

  • Schedule: On-site Monday through Friday 7am to 330pm
  • Pay $23 an hour


Purpose of Position
To provide technical and logistical support to the Pathology group, including but not limited to necropsy prosecting, tissue trimming and histology processing of tissues.  Additionally, coordinates both internally and externally executed pathology related materials produced during animal testing in medical device research.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate necropsy and tissue collection logistics with the Pathologist and the Preclinical Research team.
  • Set up necropsy labs, set up of the cassette printer and label cassettes, and conduct grossing / trimming of tissue specimens in preparation for histology processing.
  • Assist with necropsy as a prosector, data collection, labeling of specimens, photographs of gross specimens, preservation of tissue specimens (e.g., fixative, freezing, etc.), radiography of specimens.
  • Request cost estimates from external partners for histology processing and pathology evaluations, submit for Purchase Order (PO) generation and assist with finalizing invoices.
  • Coordinate shipment of tissues to external histology processing laboratories.
  • Assist with setting up a Histology Laboratory to process animal tissues collected from in-house studies, including but not limited to lab workflow and equipment set up, write standard operating procedures, and conduct histology processing of tissues.
  • Maintain Pathology related documentation including tissue including tracking chain of custody from fresh tissue specimen collection, to processing at an external laboratory and to archival.
  • Conduct inventory of pathology materials (e.g., fixed tissues, blocks, slides), maintain and organize records, logs, and workload reports as per SOP
  • Maintain the necropsy room clean and organized and inventory laboratory supplies and equipment and replenish stock as needed
  • Assist with review of standard operating procedures and use of SOPs in pathology processes and related equipment.
  • Assist in the preparation of data collection datasheets and forms (necropsy records, trim records, etc.).
  • Assist in preparation of pathology reports (prepare tables, QC data) and distributes draft pathology reports to QAU for audit and the final pathology report to the Study Director.
  • Proactively to set priorities and use time wisely to meet deadlines and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Follow all Company guidelines related to Health, Safety and Environmental practices

Qualifications (Skills & Competencies)
  • Experience in a pathology lab and/or histology lab in a laboratory, research, or veterinary setting.
  • The ability to understand and precisely follow Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Meticulous eye for detail; able to spot minor discrepancies/errors and immediately act to correct them.
  • Basic computer proficiency; Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and/or interpersonal communication skills.
  • Preferred, but not required:
  • Certificate in Histology or Associate degree in Histology
  • Experience as a Histology Technician and ability to assist setting up a Histology Lab, write procedures and conduct Histology processing of animal tissues.
  • Experience as a necropsy prosector.
  • Experience using electronic data capture system such as the Provantis-Instem/Logbook system.
  • Experience using slide scanner.
  • Experience working in a GLP regulated environment.
