Job Title: Excavator Operator – Wildfire Fuel Reduction

Location: Lakewood/Duluth Township, Minnesota

Job Type: Full-Time (Two-week assignment starting 10/7)

Salary: $30 - $45 per hour


Job Description:

Kelly Services is hiring for a temporary Excavator Operator for an essential wildfire fuel reduction project! We are looking for a skilled, safety-focused individual to operate a Kubota U 55–5 excavator equipped with a thumb attachment. Your role will be crucial in reducing wildfire risks by efficiently crushing and masticating dead balsam trees, contributing to healthier forest ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities:

- Operate the Kubota U 55–5 excavator with precision for fuel reduction tasks, including the crushing and masticating of dead balsam trees.
- Conduct site assessments to determine the most effective methods for reducing wildfire fuel loads while minimizing environmental impact.
- Collaborate with forestry and environmental teams to implement best practices in wildfire prevention and fuel management.
- Regularly maintain and inspect equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.
- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and your team.
- Assist in planning and executing project timelines and goals for efficiency.
- Document work completed and report any issues or challenges to supervisors.
- Manage and mitigate environmental impacts from operations, adhering to local regulations and best practices.

Qualifications:

- Proven experience operating excavators; experience with a Kubota U 55–5 or similar equipment is preferred.
- Familiarity with masticating and crushing techniques for vegetation management.
- Strong understanding of safety practices and regulations related to heavy equipment operation and environmental conservation.
- Knowledge of local vegetation and its impact on wildfire management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor conditions.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to overcoming challenges.
- Valid driver's license and any necessary certifications for operating heavy machinery.
- Physical stamina and strength to perform minor manual labor as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Previous experience in wildfire management, forestry, or related fields.
