Kelly Government Solutions is a strategic supplier and business partner to the federal government and its key suppliers.  Through our partnership with the National Institutes of Health, Kelly Government Solutions offers administrative, IT, engineering, scientific, and healthcare professionals the opportunity to work with one of the most prestigious research organizations in the world.  We are currently seeking a Biological Scientist with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD


This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS. The contractor shall:
  1. Conduct high-quality research to address fundamental questions in new research frontier: mechanisms underlying maintenance of axonal and synaptic energy and cellular homeostasis in neurodegeneration and regeneration
  2. Design and conduct experiments with NIH-approved methodology, collect and analyze data, maintain well-organized records and research notes, draw conclusions consistent with results, and write manuscript and review articles for publication
  3. Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function
  4. Collect and analyze biological data about relationships among and between organisms and their environment
  5. Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings
  6. Plan and administer biological research programs
  7. Identify, classify, and study structure, behavior, ecology, physiology, nutrition, culture, and distribution of plant and animal species
  8. Develop and maintain liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings
  9. Provide assistance in daily lab management; maintaining transgenic mouse lines, include setting up breeding pairs, performing neuronal cultures, and maintaining lab equipment.
  10. Maintain productive collaborations with the highest level of integrity and accountability in multiple projects with lab members.
  11. Develop and maintain multidisciplinary analysis of mouse models combined with genetic and molecular manipulation.
  12. Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs, present research results in formal and informal meetings. Communicate experimental results and new methodologies and procedures in the laboratory.
  13. Train junior lab members in laboratory techniques and experimental procedures.
  14. Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel
  15. Coordinate the work of biological technicians and technologists and other scientists
  16. Ensure compliance with NINDS/NIH safety regulations; affect any safety changes required following annual inspections.
  17. Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers
  18. Maintain laboratory equipment
  19. Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples
  20. Analyze laboratory findings
  21. Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data
  22. Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to standards
  23. Interpret/Record research or operational data


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:
  1. PhD in neuroscience and at least five years postdoc research experience with three first-authored papers in neuroscience research
  2. Develop research projects independently including experimental design, developing procedures, collecting and analyzing data for presentations in conference and publishing paper. Specifically, conducting research in using experimental models targeting brain energy metabolism and investigating synaptic mechanisms to promote the survival and integration of adult-born neurons into neural circuits.
  3. Experience with Imaging software: Imaris, ImageJ, Neurolucinda, and MBF Stereo software. Electrophysiology recordings analysis software: Axon™ pCLAMP™ integrated with the patch-clamp system. Mouse behavioral ANY-Maze software. Other software includes spreadsheets, word processing, presentation graphics, GraphPad Prism and graphing, BLAST for comparing biological sequences.
