Job Summary:
Reporting to the Dean and CEO, the Clinical Science Chair (CSC) at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) will lead the schools Department of Clinical Science, coordinate and review the Clinical Science faculty, oversee Clinical Science education, and collaborate with the Chairs of Biomedical Science and Health Systems Science (the other two overarching academic departments of the KPSOM) and the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education to maintain, continuously improve, and implement an integrated medical school curriculum. Students will experience clinical education mainly within the Permanente system, and the CSC will work closely with Permanente leaders to ensure excellence in the clinical sites and rotations.
The Department of Clinical Science is composed of approximately 1200 Permanente faculty, whose primary functions include patient care in the clinical settings, in addition to their roles as teaching faculty and in some cases, research, admissions support, student mentorship, administration, and other leadership roles. Clinical Science faculty have their primary employment affiliation through their home Permanente Medical Groups (PMGs), and their faculty appointment through KPSOM. The Clinical Science curriculum will focus on core competencies in the practice of medicine as outlined in the Educational Program Objectives of KPSOM, with particular focus on those related to patient examination, interaction, and communication; clinical reasoning, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention; and collaboration with interdisciplinary care teams. Training will take place in inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, both in-person and virtual, as well as in relevant simulated settings., The CSC will work closely with the chairs of Biomedical Science and Health Systems Science to ensure the integrated curriculum teaches on a continuum of settings. In these contexts, the patient will be the primary focus, and learning about the scientific foundations of disease, as well as biological, social, environmental, and other factors that influence the development and course of illness will be anchored in the clinical presentation. The CSC will have a distinguished record of achievement commensurate with that of a department chair at the equivalent of associate professor level or higher, with significant expertise in one or more areas of clinical science, and regional/national recognition in their field(s) of study or practice. The CSC will generally have achievements in teaching, mentorship, administration, and leadership, and will have strong interpersonal skills. They will be able to articulate a vision for leveraging innovation to build sound programs in clinical science, and its integration into medical education. Successful candidates will not only have strong credentials in their field, but also enthusiasm for being part of the leadership of a unique medical school. And their leadership profile and experience will include embodying the principles of wellness, equity, inclusion, and diversity on which KPSOM was founded.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Department of Clinical Science, inclusive of faculty and staff of KPSOM.

  • Ensure that KPSOM students master Clinical Science competencies and are prepared to employ them as resident physicians.

  • Work as a member of the KPSOM leadership team to develop the strategic and tactical plans for the optimization and implementation of the Clinical Science curriculum as a core component of the overall KPSOM curriculum.

  • Mentor, counsel, and advise students.

  • Work with the PMGs to recruit and hire faculty members for the Department of Clinical Science, and establish strong, ongoing relationships with PMG leaders to address issues as they arise and foster a positive clinical environment at all sites.

  • Work with the Office of Faculty Affairs to recommend rank appointments for Clinical Science faculty.

  • Work with the Office of Student Affairs, Office of Faculty Affairs, and/or Office of Human Resources to resolve student, faculty or staff conflicts and/or learning environment issues.

  • Mentor and advise faculty for individual professional development and advancement.

  • Conduct annual reviews of faculty, establishing short and long-term goals and metrics for accomplishment as appropriate.

  • Advocate for faculty and ensure committee appointments to establish a culture of respectful self-governance.

  • Contribute to, and support, the faculty in a culture of scholarship focused on education, health services, and other areas of research.

  • Participate in, and take a leadership role in, other activities related to establishing and maintaining a thriving and effective medical school.

  • Collaborate with KPSOM leadership to create and implement a culture of innovation, inclusion, well-being, and commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.

  • Serve on relevant KPSOM committees.

  • Clinical practice and/or active teaching role can be considered (up to 10%).



Basic Qualifications:
Experience

  • Minimum ten (10) years of demonstrated excellence in clinical science and medical education, with experience in undergraduate and/or graduate medical education.


Education

  • MD or comparable degree


License, Certification, Registration
