- Trauma Level? STEMI Receiving? Stroke Center?: Level IV, STEMI and Stroke receiving and transfer out via ground transport and or air
Typical Hospital Staffing: 5 RNs- 3 RNs to Acute Care and 2 RNs to ER
- # Beds/Trauma Bays: 7-10 rooms; currently under construction
- Do you have a Fast Track: 1-2 rooms to be converted to a fast-track & staffed by a mid-level
- Do you have a separate Triage area? If so, do you allow/require travelers to do Triage?: Done by either ER nurse present, is not a dedicated role
- Do you have a separate holding area in the ER or are ER holds intermixed w/in the ER?: No
- Do you have separate Psych/seclusion rooms?: 1 room they can make for seclusion
- Is Security in-house 24/7? Housed in the ER?: Onsite from 4 PM- 2AM, Have "radio" security system in house during the off hours with trained professionals that would come to assist
- On average, how many patients do you treat in the ER/day?: 17-32 patient per day
- Nurse: Patient Ratios: 1:3-4 depending on acuity; 1:1 for high acuity such as stroke or STEMIs
- Common diagnoses/Types of patients: Anything from a minor cold, to Stroke, STEMI, & Traumas; Small Community ER sometimes utilized as Clinic or Urgent Care
- Experience or 'Must have' skills: Must be able to work independently and be flexible. Must be comfortable with all aspects of ER nursing as they see anything that comes through the door; Must have prior trauma experience. Need to have good IV skills - no IV team on site; RT manages vents but must be able to monitor and care for a patient on a ventilator. Typically stabilize and transfer out vented patient but may have to hold up to 24 hrs depending on weather conditions. Will NOT accept first-time travelers
- Common drips?: All critical drips: Levo, Prop, and more
- ED Physician/Mid-Levels: ED Physician in house 24/7
- Charge Nurse/House Supervisor?: 1 of the 2 RNs in the ER will be the Shift Supervisor and oversees both Acute Care and ER; Will take a patient assignment when necessary
- Nurse aids/EMT/Paramedics/Patient Sitters? Ratios? Duties?: Day: MA & Secretary; Nights: MA
- Is RT in the ER 24/7? Do they do ABG's, breathing Tx, & EKG's?: RT in house M-F 7AM- 3:30 PM with call hours; have 30 mins response time
- RT Equipment (Vents, Cpap, BiPap, High Flow, etc.) Are RNs required to do anything with these besides trouble shoot?: RN to do EKGs, Breathing Treatments, and Vent management when RT not in house. RT will do ABGs, help to manage vents, and will only do breathing treatments if consulted.
- Do you have Monitor Techs in the ER?: GE Tele Monitors; No monitor tech; must be able to identify and respond appropriately to tele; Physician reads Tele
- X-Ray or CT in the ER? Transport?: Xray; Transported by Rad Tech
- Does Phlebotomy draw labs or RN's draw?: RN to draw all labs; phlebotomy in house if needed for assistance
- Shifts & Scheduling: Scheduling done at management level. Staff have predictable schedules. Try to block schedule for night shift when possible, but ask that travelers stay flexible and help to fill gaps in staffing. Manager will work with travelers on the schedule.
- Weekend Requirements: Depends; Typically 4 weekend shifts in a 4 week period
- Holiday Requirements: May be asked to go in the Holiday Rotation
- Is there call or a standby requirement?: None
- Floating Requirements: May be asked to float the Acute Care area to assist as needed
- Scrub Color/Dress Code: May wear any color scrubs; must be professional
- Unit/Department specific orientation: 1-2 days of orientation with a preceptor
- Additional Notes: Has minimal resources; Located in a rural area; Will hold patients as needed usually weather dependent; Need to be a team player and willing to help out as needed; Close knit group that is open to travelers. A lot of verbal and nurse initiated orders, RN must be comfortable with the communication and teamwork, autonomy.
