**Job Description:**

The Senior Medical Director of Oncology (SMD) is a region-wide role with a broad scope of authority, budget control and accountability to oversee all aspects of oncology within the region. This role requires a unique combination of clinical expertise, strategic mindset, operational excellence and authentic, bold leadership to reimagine the delivery of oncological care in a way that is impactful, affordable, and allows services to be delivered as close to a patient's home as possible leveraging sustainable and digitally enabled strategies in a value-based model.

Scope

Reporting to the Associate Chief Medical Officer of Specialty Region, the Senior Medical Director of Oncology (SMD) will provide the senior leadership, innovative strategic vision, and operational oversight necessary to build a cohesive high-quality oncology program across region Intermountain Health.

Job Essentials

Develop and operationalize an innovative clinical strategic vision rooted in population health and value-based care principles.

Deeply understand the needs and expectations of health care consumers, patients, families, and providers in every region served. Enhance and build collaborative relationships across Intermountain' s various programs and departments while cultivating supportive relationships with affiliated and community partners to nurture a community dedicated to providing extraordinary care and superior service at an affordable cost.

Advance clinical care models that provide unparalleled access to care in every format patient and consumer expect, and access to investigational therapies through clinical trials.

Clinical Care and Quality

Strategic and operational oversight of strategies to promote increased disease site expertise while balancing geographic challenges (rural vs urban).

Oversight of performance improvement efforts as related to clinical outcomes.

Oversight of implementation of evidence-based guidelines such as NCCN, ASCO, and the implementation of oncology clinical pathways. Promotion of oncology-related accreditations (Commission on Cancer, ASCO QOPI, Breast Center Accreditation, etc.) and performance across the system.

Coordination of initiatives with registry and other data to ensure ability to track patient outcomes, practice patterns and quality of care.

Medical Staff Engagement

Establish a collaborative and interconnected culture within the oncology program, including employed and affiliated physicians and community partners to ensure a dedicated oncology practice group committed to the goals and vision of the oncology program.

Promoting collaboration with medical specialties needed to support the oncology program.

Oversight of the development and implementation of oncology medical staff conditions of participation (e. g. expertise and practice commitments) to support quality patient care, research, value, and community goals.

Oversight of efforts to increase physician participation in clinical trials.

Oversight of peer review/performance improvement activities for the medical staff of the oncology program. Oversight of oncology education programs, seminars, and conferences for medical staff.

Clinical Cancer Research

Working in partnership with the Office of Research to oversee oncology clinical trials ensuring appropriate trials for patients and IRB and study compliance.

Coordination and oversight of oncology research and the development of an infrastructure that addresses barriers to accrual for physicians and a systematic approach to assuring a portfolio of trials that best serves the needs of the oncology program patient population (e. g. a mix of industry, NCI and investigator initiated).

Coordination of linkages with research institutes for access to trials.

Promotion of academic relationships in support of the teaching and research goals of the cancer program.

Patient Care

Promoting provider engagement with program components which support the care of cancer patients in the oncology program:

Prospective Multi-Disciplinary Care

Patient Navigation

Survivorship and Palliative Care

Genetic Counseling and Molecular/Genetic Testing

Promotion of collaboration with key hospital and health system departments and other organizational entities to ensure seamless and coordinated care for cancer patients (e. g. Intermountain Medical Group, Office of Research, Information Technology, Select Health) and other necessary linkages with partners (private practice physicians, research partners).

Community Relationships

Supporting the enhancement of relationships with community organizations which offer programs and services to support patients within the oncology program.

Promotion of provider participation in patient and community oncology education and screening programs. Providing strategic guidance on oncology program marketing efforts that promote physician expertise.

Minimum Qualifications

MD or DO degree with board certification in oncology or an oncology related specialty and a track record of notable education and training (education and training are verified) and eligibility for medical licensure.

Eligible to hold active privileges at an Intermountain Hospital and be credentialed by Select Health.

Experience building a comprehensive oncology program across a multi-hospital system.

Experience working in a complex health system, medical group, or risk-bearing organization.

Deep understanding of healthcare industry trends and external market forces impacting the delivery of oncology services.

Experience in designing and implementing care models and developing associated clinical guidelines and protocols.

Experience in the development and implementation of clinical and business quality improvement initiatives.

Experience building high performing clinical teams, with a proven track record of execution and delivering on an organization's goals and objectives.

A "leader of leaders," with a demonstrated ability to drive clinician engagement and alignment.

Experience with change management and leading in the adaptation and implementation of new processes or clinical technologies.

Experience leveraging telemedicine and digitally enabled oncology platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

Deep understanding of cancer care and experience working in a top performing Cancer Program
