5B MedSurg Urology-Nephrology

Nurse:Patient Ratios
Often have 4-5 nurses working day shift & 3-4 nurses on nights. If have 3 RNs & no LPN, will cap floor census at 21.
Often utilize LPNs & do a team nursing approach, can be 7-9 patients/team.
Required certifications (i. e., BLS, ACLS?)
BLS
Transplant education provided on-site for those who are on assignment for extended amount of time.
Common diagnoses/Types of patients
Urology, nephrology, transplants (new kidney transplants are cared for by perm staff). General MedSurg overflow - wounds, infections, bowel resections, pneumonia, hospice,
CIWA, chest tubes, surgical drains. (No dialysis on this unit.)
Average length of stay 3-4 days.
Experience or 'Must have' skills
If no Cerner experience, must have travel experience.
Are RNs required to titrate drips?
Heparin only

Is there a Charge Nurse &/or House Supervisor on each shift? Does the charge nurse take an assignment?
Charge nurse on every shift. Does take a full patient load.
House supervisor in house 24/7
Are there nurse aids/patient care techs on this unit? Ratios? Duties?
Yes, 3-4 aides on day shift & 2-3 aides on night shift
RT Equipment (Vents, Cpap, BiPap, High Flow, etc.) Are RNs required to do anything with these besides trouble shoot?
RT in house 24/7. Cpap & Bipap for sleeping. Occasional trach.
RT typically do neb treatments; but RNs also do as needed.
Are there tele/monitor techs on this unit? Are RNs required to read their own strips? What brand are the tele monitors?
Tele techs - off site (on 3E IMC floor), will monitor & read strips.
Shifts & Scheduling (Do you allow self-scheduling? Block scheduling?)
12Hr shifts, 645a-1915p/645p-715a
Will try to accommodate block scheduling. If there are any issues with scheduling, please bring this to the attention of the manager. She will do her best to accommodate
scheduling requests/needs.

Pharmacist on unit M-F during day time hours.
Rapid response team in house 24/7.
This can be a challenging unit with patient population/diagnoses. Looking for someone who can connect with the patient, to assist in encouraging patients to follow care
plans.
Turn over 1/3-1/2 of population daily - a lot of discharges & admissions.
We need to make sure all travelers coming to SMH are aware they will be working with LPNs. We have several on our MedSurg units & do a team nursing approach.
