Summary Under the direction of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN) the Nursing Assistant (NA) functions as a member of the nursing team and assists the RN and the LVN in the care of patients. The incumbent functions as NA, under close supervision and refers issues/questions to supervisors, higher grade NA and other health care professionals and is directed by the RN/or LVN in the delivery of care of patients in acute, sub-acute or chronic states of illness. Responsibilities The duties and responsibilities of the Nursing Assistant include but are not limited to the following: The Nursing Assistant provides nursing care, performs clinical procedures according to specialty, technical procedures and ancillary services for patients. The NA performs a variety of personal care or nursing care activities. The NA helps each patient attain optimal physical, physiological, emotional and social well-being. The Nursing Assistant also helps with preceptorship of the lower level NA and: Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychological, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patient served in his/her assigned area. Provides input to colleagues, Team Leader/Charge Nurse for making assignments prior to receiving report at the start of scheduled tour. Listens attentively to report, notes pertinent items and asks for clarification when unsure of content. Formulates work schedule based on prioritization of patient care needs. Responds to patient call lights on unit/area assigned. Will facilitate as a 1:1 sitter for SI/HI patients, 1:2 sitter for confused/fall risk patients Assist patients with ADL's and with meals as required, with maintaining as much independence as possible. Assists with the ambulation of patients including active/passive ROM. Preserves patient safety, confidentiality and, respects patient/family/significant other's rights. Recognizes medical emergencies and initiates appropriate interventions. Immediately reports observations and or knowledge of abuse or neglect of patients and loss or damage of government property Attends interdisciplinary rounds and discharge planning to assist with patient instruction/discharge for patients on designated assignment. Assist with admissions, discharges, transfers and death procedures. Assists with transporting patients to procedures, between wards and at discharge. Provides respectful care that maintains individuality, dignity and self-esteem. Practices universal precautions, infection control techniques and safe medical waste disposal. Uses equipment safely and uses proper body mechanics. Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking, bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pulling and /or similar activities carried out using safe patient handling techniques. Performs Environmental safety rounds to make sure unit/patient rooms are safe. (Halls are clear, no broken equipment, beds in low locked position, no tripping hazards) Work Schedule: Full-Time; 12 hour shifts day & night shift: 0630-1900 & 1830-0700 Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. One year above high school with courses related to the [NA] occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year [ ] as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 Grade Determinations: GS-3 Experience. Less than one year of specialized experience as a [NA] or experience in another medical field, performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments; OR, Education. Successful completion of high school diploma or a GED. AND Demonstrated KSAs:1.Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.2.Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. 3.Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals. Education: One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant. GS-4: Experience. One year of specialized experience as a [NA] or experience equivalent to the GS-3 , performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments; OR, Education. Successful completion of high school diploma or a GED. AND Demonstrated KSAs:1.
