The Medicine Department of James A. Haley Veterans Hospital is seeking a Hematologist/Oncologist to lead our dynamic team.

Position Details:

The VA Tampa Healthcare System is actively recruiting to fill a Board Certified or Board Eligible Hematologist/Oncologist to help care for our Veterans – America's Heroes. We are looking for individuals with broad experience in all aspects of clinical Hematology/Oncology. The Hematologist/Oncologist will supervise the department in addition to having dedicated time to provide direct patient care to our unique Veteran population.

Practice Highlights:

  • Management of hematology/oncology patients in the outpatient, inpatient consult, and telehealth setting
  • Conducting and enrolling patients into clinical trials
  • Supervision and instruction of Hematology/Oncology Fellows from Moffitt Cancer Center/USF and oversee mid-level practitioners.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary meetings
  • Basic and translational research in hematology and/or oncology
  • Currently, the department has 17 Fellows in half-day clinics and 2 Fellows on the in-patient service.
  • Call is shared 1 in 7 with 6 attendees. Fellows are also available on call.
  • There are 5 Oncology Nurse Navigators and one APRN in a Survivorship Clinic.

Duties and responsibilities include, but is not limited to:

  • Physician's clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process.
  • Provides direct hands-on patient care including evaluation and treatment of hematology/oncology patients, determination of whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting, and management of chronic disease.
  • Comprehensive initial medical/psychosocial history and physical examination
  • Order appropriate diagnostic tests and work-up
  • Review and interpret diagnostic tests and take appropriate action
  • Formulate and record diagnostic impressions
  • Refer patients to appropriate consultations both within the VA and in the community
  • Provide clinical guidance to patients, families and other health care providers over the phone, secure messaging or through the mail to coordinate health care, educate and give advice
  • Ensure accurate documentation of medical assessments, interactions, and observations
  • Enter orders into CPRS for medication, consultations, testing etc.
  • Demonstrates current clinical practice
  • Attend Medical Center and community meetings, seminars, conferences
  • Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care
  • Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication and provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education.
  • Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs. This also includes participation in On-Call coverage for evenings, weekends and holidays).

Salary Range: $360,000-$375,000

**No State or Local Income Tax**

Retention Bonus: Eligible

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Position Eligible up to $200,000

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Preferred Experience: Board certified/ board eligible Hematologist/Oncologist; 1-3 years of recent experience.
