Position Summary:

Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures related to diagnostic imaging; specifically Nuclear Medicine [NM], PET and SPECT/CT Examinations. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks requiring a certain degree of creativity and latitude. Produces NM, PET and SPECT/CT images of the appropriate anatomy according to departmental policies and procedures.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Meets and introduces themselves to patient prior to exam.
  • Performs NM & PET/CT examinations following EIC Radiologist's set Protocols
  • Full understanding and operation of all Nuclear Medicine equipment, including PET/CT, E-Cam, Thyroid Probe and BioDose.
  • Evaluates and maintains a quality control program in conjunction with the Radiation Physicist.
  • Follows guidelines for procurement and preparation of radiopharmaceuticals to include dose calculation, identification, documentation, administration, disposal, storage and safe handling.
  • Establishes and properly maintains venous access routes.
  • Recognizes pathology and takes responsibility to perform additional images for study enhancement
  • Verifies physician order and obtains patient history, explains standard procedures, and addresses patient concerns.
  • Manages biohazard, chemical and radioactive waste in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Performs appropriate radioactive contamination monitoring and any necessary decontamination procedures.
  • Distributes and maintains film badges along with instructing personnel about radiation safety.
  • Maintains constant communication with guest throughout study.
  • Maintains all clinical equipment, including daily QC, and ability to troubleshoot all NM & PET/CT equipment. Notifies service as needed, maintains service logs and reports any and all performance issues to Clinical Supervisor.
  • Responsible to observe all IV Contrast injections and respond appropriately.
  • Verifies that appropriate clinical information is included with scan interpretation.
  • Verifies contrast is appropriately loaded into injector prior to injection of contrast.
  • Operation of PACs System and printers.
  • Coordinates patient's scheduled exam and appropriate medical necessity with Guest Scheduling Representative(s).
  • Follows radiation safety guidelines and utilizes lead shielding as required following ALARA.
  • Consults Radiologist with any and all acute positive findings and communicates exam results with referring physician(s) as requested.
  • Practices accurate and timely completion of scheduled and unscheduled work to maximize productivity.
  • Responsible for accurate coding and completing of all ordered procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Ability to manage high patient volumes.


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • In depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology and cross sectional anatomy.
  • Knowledge of the following:
  • Performing all basic and complex NM & PET/CT studies.
  • Principles and techniques of NM & PET/CT scanning.
  • Advanced computer operations (including keyboard input and proper selection of protocols to scan various anatomical sections.)
  • Radiation protection standard, devices and techniques to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained.
  • Responsible to keep license current and provide copy on annual basis.
  • Provide for patient care; comfort, safety and patient confidentiality.

Requirements:

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education & Training: High School Diploma or Equivalent, Completion of a Radiologic Technologist Program and/or Accredited Nuclear Medicine Program

Experience: 2 years NM Technologist

License / Certification: Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist, CPR Certification
