Job Description

The Specialist Instructor, Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL)  prepares and conducts training for information systems courses in a classroom setting for traditional college courses and/or specialized workshops. The Specialist provides students with a combination of on-spot training and assistance with internet connectivity, Microsoft Office Suite, and digital literacy. Responsibilities will include coaching students and community members on technical support for networking and personal computer fundamentals, loaning out equipment, directing individuals to CSN services, developing lesson plans, facilitating engaging activities, assessing student progress, and promoting cultural sensitivity and diversity in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate workshops in English/Spanish (workshops may include, IT, Microsoft Office, and other digital literacy skills)

  • Prepare and organize instructional materials, including lab equipment, software, and other teaching aids.

  • Provide one-on-one and group tutoring to students, helping them understand complex concepts and complete assignments.

  • Evaluate student performance through assessments, projects, and exams, providing constructive feedback.

  • Attend professional development as required to stay updated with the latest advancements in IT education.

  • Collaborate and participate in curriculum development and continuous improvement of course content with DWED staff and internal/external partners.

  • Record student attendance through DWED's database, Lumens.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and success.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate/Bacherlo's degree or industry-recognized certifications in information technology or related field from an accredited college or university OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 1 year experience teaching at a college or university level, coaching, training or workshop facilitation, or experience as High School Technology teacher.

  • Experience with Instructional Technology for the delivery of course content.

  • Experience teaching adults

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

  • TESOL/TEFL/CASAS Certification

  • Microsoft Office Suite Certification

  • Experience teaching English-as-a-Second Language

The ideal candidate should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Ability to facilitate IT Workshops in English/Spanish.

  • Knowledge of instructional resources and developing IT training and workshops and lesson plans.

  • Ability to provide technical support for community members and assistance in loaning out equipment.

  • Ability to effectively assess and monitor student progress.

  • Ability to assist with internet connectivity.

  • Excellent customer service and verbal written and communication skills.

  • Flexibility to work daytime/evenings, availability at any of the CSN locations, with a focus on Monday-Fridays during morning and/or afternoon hours, possibly with Saturday sessions.

  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Knowledge of student learning management information systems such as Lumens/Amatrol (preferred)
