The City of Edmonton is seeking dedicated and hardworking individuals to join our Parks and Roads Services team as Encampment Labourers. In this vital role, you will be part of a team responsible for cleaning and restoring various sites across Edmonton, particularly focusing on addressing the complex issue of homelessness and encampments on public land. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and environmental stewardship, as you will be working to restore the natural environment to its pre-disturbance state.
As an Encampment Labourer, you will play a crucial role in the cleanup of vacant encampments throughout the City of Edmonton's parks and river valley system. This involves preparing for site cleanups, removing refuse and hazards, and ensuring sites are restored effectively. The work is physical in nature, requiring the use of both manual and specialized tools and equipment, and an awareness of the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. You will also collaborate with other City services and outreach teams to ensure the safe and respectful removal of encampments.
What will you do?
- Scout and map encampments using GPS-enabled apps
- Determine safe and efficient routes to access sites and remove debris
- Prepare for clean-up, ensuring all necessary safety equipment and tools are available
- Perform site assessments, identifying and mitigating potential hazards
- Remove refuse, clothing, biohazards, and other materials from encampment sites
- Operate chainsaws, winches, and other equipment to clear obstructions and remove waste
- Ensure sites are cleaned and restored to their natural state
- Liaise with EPS, Rangers, Outreach teams, and other stakeholders
- Educate and communicate with citizens encountered during duties
- Maintain vehicles and equipment
