                                       Director-Career & Technical Education
Position open until filled
Salary:  $116,175 to $126,737 DOE (for 260 day contract)    
The Mat-Su Borough School District:
The MSBSD is a wonderful place to live work and play!  We are located approximately 40 miles north of Anchorage and are the second largest school district in the state of Alaska, home to more than 100,000 residents.  The Mat-Su Borough spans over 25,000 square miles of lakes, rivers, glaciers, and mountain, including America's largest peak, Mt. Denali.  The School District serves approximately 19,000 students located at 49 school sites ranging in enrollments from 30 to 2,500 students.
 
Class Summary:
The Career & Technical Education (CTE) Director manages the District's career and technical education program; as well as lead the development and improvement of the career and technical education delivery.  They manage all aspects of applying for, budgeting, reporting, grant management, and is the DEED-CTE liaison for the Federal Carl Perkins CTE Grant.
 
Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must hold a valid Alaska Type B Administrative and Type A Teaching certificates
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a school administrator and five years successful vocational teaching experience
  • Knowledge of career and technology education curriculum and instruction, and able to articulate the District's career and technical educational programs and services to various stakeholders and employee groups
  • Ability to evaluate and manage career and technical education district level personnel, budgets and instructional programs and practices
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
 
Essential Duties:
  • Direct the district technical/vocational services to meet students' needs.
  • Ensure that student progress is evaluated on a regular, systematic basis, and the findings, including student achievement data and district assessments, are used to make CTE programs more effective.
  • Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs, assisting educators to pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise in the use of technology related to CTE courses.
  • Coordinate the planning and conducting of periodic needs assessments related to course selection offering for the CTE courses.
  • Oversee CTE curriculum review process with CTE Curriculum Coordinator at the district and school level with help from appropriate administrators, ensuring that CTE learner outcomes are being taught, courses sequenced in programs arranged by Pathways.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge CTE program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs, industry needs, and in line with district's strategic goals.
  • Plan, develop, evaluate, and coordinate CTE staff professional development training options and improvement plans by using the mission of the district, program evaluation outcomes and input from principals, teachers, and others to ensure best practices focusing on district and state goals.
  • Develop and implement CTE Marketing focusing on building awareness of CTE overall delivery methods and locations, careers, certifications, pathways, dual-enrollment and post-secondary training.
  • Ensure that CTE teachers have the necessary training and materials to improve participation, CTE concentration, preparation for post-secondary options including Careers, College, and earning industry certifications.
  • Coordinate district Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) including advisor stipends, scope of chapter activities, and district participation in state and national events.
  • Present CTE data, processes, and delivery to community organizations, district leadership, school leaders and staff, and industry partners.
  • Aide in development and delivery methods for systemic career guidance vertically aligned across K-12.
  • Monitor, analyze and understand operating costs and district budgeting along with accounting processes.
  • Administer the CTE district budget, Perkins' grant, and other grants to ensure that programs are cost effective and that funds are managed prudently.
  • Compile district, federal, and grant budgets and cost estimates based on documented CTE program needs in addition to managing CTE district purchases in accordance with budgetary and grant limitations and district procurement policy.
  • Maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment and recommend disposal and replacement of equipment, as necessary.
  • Maintain safety standards that conform to state, federal, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety for CTE related equipment, CTE labs and communicate with district risk manager.
  • Ensure that security measures are taken to protect students, staff, supplies, equipment in CTE classrooms, labs, and facilities by implementing and conducting safety expectations.
  • Work cooperatively with principals and staff to select personnel for instructional needs/assignments by assisting in the recruitment and selection, training, and support of CTE personnel; including retention, mentorship, and teacher preparation efforts.
  • Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of CTE to community and solicit support in realizing it, demonstrating awareness of district and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  • Work and participate with community groups, business leaders, and industry to create, maintain, and sustain partnerships to support CTE programs and to meet the needs of community stakeholders.
  • Foster goodwill through coordination of partnerships and recognition with the business, industry, and community partners and serve as a liaison for the district.
  • Work with post-secondary institutions on dual-enrollment opportunities for students and seamless transition opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.
 
Salary and Benefits:
  • Salary of $116,175 - $126,737 DOE – 260 day contract
  • District benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance of $150,000
  • State of Alaska Teachers Retirement Benefits (not a Social Security Employer)
  • 36 days of personal leave and 15.96 days of sick leave, annually
