Position Summary
This position provides and coordinates instructional support to physics laboratories. The position provides professional and technical support requiring knowledge of physics including equipment, materials, techniques, and procedures. Under general direction, the position completes lab set-ups, maintains organized lab rooms and prep rooms, assists other technicians, and coordinates with faculty to modify and/or adapt experiments and demonstrations or implement new experiments and demonstrations. The position may assist with a variety of other science-related undergraduate courses, research courses, and community outreach programs.
Pay, Benefits & Work SchedulePosition Salary Range: $48,024/year - $64,476/year
The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
We offer comprehensive compensation package with salary and benefits as the main components. Competitive salary is within the Range stated above, and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA).

About the DepartmentThe Bellevue College (BC) Science Division, by fostering an environment in which students, faculty and staff work collaboratively to expand students' knowledge in the disciplines of science and mathematics, seeks to provide students with a foundation to achieve their goals and to function as responsible and contributing members of the community.

Perform lab preparation duties
- Prepare and set up equipment and materials in support of lab courses.
- Responsible for lab coordination, support, purchasing, and prep room functions.
- Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines as set forth in lab schedules.
- Maintain and develop lecture demonstrations; test lab experiment procedures.
- Use safety procedures in handling hazardous materials and properly dispose of chemical waste.
- Advise faculty and students of potential safety problems with equipment or chemicals.
- Operate, maintain, and repair lab equipment and instrumentation.
- Train faculty and students in the use of equipment and advanced instruments.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
Perform lab monitoring duties
- Provide clean and organized labs and materials.
- Maintain control over assigned space, equipment, materials, and chemicals.
- Maintain safe working environment; understand and follow applicable laws, regulations, established standards.
- Monitor lab to ensure compliance with safety policy.
- Develop standard operating policies and procedures.
- Assist in development of safe lab procedures.
Maintain lab supplies and equipment needs
- Determine need for materials, equipment, and instruments necessary to support assigned lab course loads.
- Request and dispense supplies, materials, and equipment.
- Maintain stock levels and inventory records.
- May coordinate with outside vendors.
Support faculty with lab related projects
- Assist in innovative lab development.
- Provide professional and technical assistance to support a variety of lab and research courses.
- Provide assistance to faculty and students in use of advanced instrumentation.
Other duties
- Participate in campus-wide events or training.
- Participate in campus governance.
- Participate in other campus committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree with a major study in physics or equivalent STEM degree from an accredited college or university. Any combination of relevant education and/or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- At least two (2) years full-time experience as a scientific lab technician or equivalent experience in a graduate program.
- Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory setting; handling chemical and biological waste.
- Experience working with and knowledge of safe laboratory practices.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and projects, manage and organize supplies, and multi-task to assist others.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment and perform minor repairs
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
- Ability to work on feet for an extended period.
- Experience supporting project-based or research-based labs in physics.
- Experience working with advanced instrumentation including lasers, microscopes, and analyzers.
- Experience working in a higher education laboratory environment.
- Experience with the design and construction of laboratory materials and equipment.
- Significant coursework in physics.
