The Senior Scientist - Fauna will report to the Mining Studies Manager and will be responsible for delivering fauna-related studies to support mining approvals. This data will be crucial for implementing fauna management plans and informing mine planning constraints.

The role requires strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills to execute fauna assessments for Alcoa's WA Mining Operations. Key responsibilities include developing, planning, implementing, and supervising assessment programs, as well as verifying assessment outputs for use in the approvals and mine planning process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement standardised protocols, including scope of work programs, to ensure biological assessments comply with regulatory standards.

  • Provide technical support to WA Mining for all fauna assessment requirements.

  • Review and verify the accuracy and completeness of assessment data and reports.

  • Oversee and manage environmental consultants, ensuring adherence to Alcoa's safety standards through effective communication with the Contractor Supervisor.

  • Foster strong relationships with regional environmental and WA Mining teams to facilitate effective communication, problem-solving, and risk mitigation.

  • Provide expert guidance on fauna and biodiversity management and assessment standards, aligning with Alcoa's corporate policies and international certifications (e.g., ASI, ICMM).

What you can bring to the role:

To play a part in our ongoing success we are seeking someone with:

  • Ideally you will possess a Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Zoology, Conservation Biology, or a related field, with a preferred postgraduate qualification in Ecology or a relevant discipline.

  • Proven track record in conducting ecological assessments

  • Excellent knowledge of Jarrah Forest threatened fauna species

  • Strong skills in project coordination and management

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organisation.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to build positive and productive working relationships
