Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus seeks an Assistant Alakai Hiipoi (Assistant Unit Coordinator) to support our Halau Kapikohaniamalama summer program. This is a temporary, seasonal position that will be paid a stipend of $7,473.00.
Job Summary
Assists the Alaka'i Hi'ipoi (Unit Coordinator) and summer program with operational oversight; student discipline; creating a safe learning environment by modeling mutual respect and enforces summer school rules and regulations in alignment with KS policies and procedures; supervising student aides and assistants. Communicates with students, parents and the Summer School Leadership Team, as necessary, to inform of student progress and any other academic or social issues that may arise.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist with the management of the unit to include but not limited to providing a safe learning environment for all students, teachers and staff; modeling mutual respect, adherence to and enforcement of policies and procedures set by the Summer Program and the KS organization in a positive and formative manner.
- Assists with supervising, monitoring, coaching, scheduling and disciplining, as necessary, summer school aides and assistants.
- Oversees student discipline, in conjunction with the Unit Coordinator, communicates with parents and the Summer School Leadership Team, as necessary, to inform of student progress and any other academic and social issues that may arise.
- Coordinates and schedules student aides and assistants, bus duty assignments, etc. Communicates with the appropriate offices and staff regarding missing supplies, transportation, field trips, etc.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, curriculum & instruction or closely related field.
- Minimum one year of experience teaching school-aged students in a classroom setting.
- Working knowledge of cultural protocol and Hawaiian language.
- Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, students, parents, and other summer school staff members.
- Demonstrate effective decision making skills necessary to review sensitive issues, seek solutions, weigh potential consequences, and to initiate and follow-up on appropriate action.
- Understand knowledge of appropriate disciplinary measures for students.
- Working knowledge of the Halau 'o Kapikohanaiamalama, KSM summer school program, content and goals.
- Proven supervisory experience and ability to motivate and guide others.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience with Culture Based Education, Project Based Learning, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous administrative or supervisory experience in an educational setting.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
- Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
Working Conditions
- Hours during program: 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.
- Work is conducted in an office/classroom environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
- Work is typically conducted Monday - Friday during normal business hours but evening and weekend hours may be required to meet goals and objectives.
